Comedy Series - Corner Gas

Forty kilometres from nowhere and way beyond normal is Corner Gas, an ensemble comedy series about a bunch of nobodies who get up to a whole lot of nothing in the fictional prairie town of Dog River. Starring Saskatchewan native and Gemini winner Brent Butt, Corner Gas is a roadside service station, is also the first original narrative comedy series in Canada AND it has finished its season six.

Corner Gas is:

Corner Gas focuses on:

-the life (or lack thereof) of Brent LeRoy, proprietor of a gas station that is the only stop for miles around and a hub of action on the Prairies.

Dog River is:

-a place where everyone knows everyone else's business. Populated by a group of regular folks, the town's many "distinguished" residents include Brent's parents Oscar and Emma, coffee shop owner Lacey Burrows, his best friend Hank Yarbo, police officers Davis Quinton and Karen Pelly and retail assistant Wanda.

SON-IN-LAW?? WELL, that got your attention! He's not really ... just sometimes Brent reminds me of my son-in-law. (Don't tell him I said that.)

Brent Butt was born and raised in the small farming community of Tisdale, Saskatchewan (population 3000). As the youngest of seven children, one does what one can to be noticed, and at an early age Brent discovered that being funny was a good way to get and hold people's attention. He says that when he was 12 he watched a stand-up comic on television and immediately told his mother that he was going to become a comedian. She replied, "Fine, just do it outside."

Brent honed his comedic storytelling prowess at the local coffee shop, where he and his friends sat around for hours discussing everything from world domination, to the most comfortable kind of socks. Brent insists, "Coffee shop conversation was a great way to learn comedy. It's relaxed and conversational and the jokes build naturally without forcing them.

In high school Brent performed stand-up comedy at variety nights and drama nights. When he was 20 a comedy club opened up in nearby Saskatoon, and Brent moved to the city to pursue a career in humor.

Within four months of his first amateur night appearance, he was offered a tour on the road. After a year he was headlining in Toronto, and after only 4 years, he showcased in his own gala performance at the world's largest international comedy festival - Montreal's 'Just For Laughs'. Brent became a regular at Just for Laughs as well as appearing on numerous national and international television programs. Aside from his own national special Bedtime with Brent Butt, he has been seen on CTV, Global, A&E and HBO. His one-hour TV special entitled Comedy Now-Funnypants earned him a Gemini Nomination in the category "Best Comedy Performance". He was named "Best Male Stand-Up in Canada" at the 2001 Canadian Comedy Awards and was subsequently selected to represent his country on the World Comedy Tour in Australia. He followed that by hosting the Just For Laughs Asian Tour in Singapore. His invitation to appear on the CBC 50th Anniversary Special entitled All-Star Comedy Homecoming secured his reputation as one of the funniest people in the country, as he performed alongside the most noted comedic minds from the past 5 decades of Canadian entertainment.

In 2007, he, along with his Corner Gas co-stars, took home the Gemini for best Ensemble Performance in a Comedy Program or Series. In 2008, Butt was honoured to join the ranks of Bob Newhart, John Cleese, John Candy and others when he received the Comedy Network Sir Peter Ustinov Award at The World Television Festival in Banff.

Over the years, Butt, who claims he never really went after an acting career, landed bit parts in various productions such as 2000s Duets, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, the Bob Saget directed TV movie Becoming Dick, and episodes of The Kids In The Hall, The X-Files (1998) and Millennium (1997). Who knew he was cooking up his own series, Corner Gas, set in the tiny town of Dog River with an odd bunch of archetypal characters? "It came together pretty quick, if you don't count the 17 years of being on the road as a standup" says Butt of the series for which he's presently writing the sixth season.

Brent not only stars but also wears several hats as creator, writer, showrunner and executive producer. He has also directed several episodes. Corner Gas has become a Canadian icon. "For the first time in a generation, the highest-rated sitcom on primetime schedules here is a Canadian show, not American."(Hollywood Reporter-March 2005). Corner Gas remains one of the top ranked Canadian programs in any genre this season and ranking as high as No. 12 on Canada's Top 20 list of programs.

Brent Butt has made his home in Vancouver for the last 15 years, and continues to tour the country with his unique brand of stand-up comedy, performing in theatres and as a much sought after corporate entertainer. "I love what I do." Butt says. "I still look at it as just having coffee. Only now it's with a thousand or so people at a time."

Fred Ewanuick's recent feature work includes; Larry Di Stefano's Love and Other Dilemmas, Young Triffle for Writer/Director Mary Walsh and Black Eyed Dog for Quebec filmmaker Pierre Gang who he worked with on the MOW Selling Innocence. Feature credits include the independent films, Crossing and Absolute Zero, and the Miramax family film, Chestnut. His other feature films include New Line Cinema's Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds, The Delicate Art of Parking, which won him a Best Actor Award at Spain's Peniscola Film Festival and premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival, where it won Best Canadian Feature. Ewanuick made his film debut in MGM/UA's A Guy Thing, followed by a role in The Santa Clause 2.

Ewanuick is a regular on the CTV hit series Corner Gas, co-staring as Brent Butt's best friend. Ewanuick's other series credits include three seasons of the CTV comedy/drama series Robson Arms and guest starring roles in Da Vinci's Inquest and Dark Angel. He made his television debut as "a spinning gnome" in The Addams Family series.

Born in Port Moody, British Columbia, Ewanuick was bitten by the theatre bug during a stint at Douglas College, New Westminster where he decided to pursue an acting career. He subsequently trained for three years with acting coach Shea Hampton, with whom he continues to study in Vancouver, B.C., where he lives.

Gabrielle has been acting since she was seventeen and has shared the screen with an impressive list of talented actors. Following a wealth of roles in top Canadian and American shows, Gabrielle landed a lead in CTV's Corner Gas - the highest rated comedy program in Canadian television history.

I've had the good fortune to stumble across shows she's appeared in. One was Stargate SG-1. I happened to catch the beginning of the episode and saw her name on the credits.

The other was the Neon Rider. I was flipping through the channels one day and happened across the show. I recalled that she had done an episode of it, so I watched a few minutes on the off chance that this was her episode. And, it was. She was young when she worked on it, mayby 19 or 20, so I didn't recognize her until she spoke, then I recognized the voice right away.

Then there's the Diet Coke commercial she did. But since that aired something like six months before Corner Gas first premiered, I didn't realize who the very attractive woman in the commercial was...

Corner Gas is currently the most watched comedy series in the country with an average of 1.6 million viewers per episode, making Gabrielle Miller a household name.

Eric Peterson brings "Oscar Leroy" to life, the curmudgeon father of Brent Butt's "Brent Leroy." Oscar has decided he's earned a little down time and has passed the responsibility of running the family business on to his son, Brent. That leaves Oscar loads of time to drive his wife Emma to her wits end, while telling Brent how to run the gas station.

Eric is one of Canada's most accomplished actors, a winner of four Gemini Awards and a Dora Award. He has portrayed a broad range of memorable characters from his lead in Billy Bishop Goes to War to lawyer Leon Robinovitch in the CBC series Street Legal.

Eric was born and raised in Saskatchewan, and while he now lives in Toronto, he enjoys visiting his cottage in Saskatchewan's Lake District during his downtime.

Veteran Vancouver actress Janet Wright plays "Emma," the long-suffering wife of "Oscar" and mother Brent Leroy. She is the glue that holds this unusual family together.

Janet was born in England, and moved to Saskatoon, SK, at a very young age. Janet and her three siblings all became successful actors. She has performed for virtually every major theater company in Canada, and has been affiliated with the Vancouver Arts Club Theater since the early 1970s, performing and directing in over 40 productions for that company alone.

Janet enjoys the behind the scenes and technical end of production as much as she does acting. She had directed for many major theater companies across Canada, including productions at the Stratford Festival.

Her film credits include The Perfect Storm (with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg) and Bordertown Cafe for which she won a genie award for best actress. Her television credits include appearances on recent series such as Dark Angel and Lexx, as well as Canadian classics such as The King of Kensington and The Beachcombers.

Janet was recently honoured with a Gemini for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series for her performance in the feature length television drama Betrayed as well as the 2007 Gemini for Best Ensemble Performance in a Comedy Program or Series for Corner Gas.

Senior police officer Davis Quinton is no small town cop. He doesn't take his position in the community lightly and his civic duty often leads to drastic measures - like the first Dog River Police ride-along. Keeping his 'rookie' cop in line can be trying at times, but luckily there's new equipment to demo and townspeople to protect.

Cardinal's television credits include Renegadepress.com, Moccasin Flats, Relic Hunter, Roxy Hunter and the movie North of 60: Distant Drumming. His performance in the MOW Tecumseh: The Last Warrior earned him a First Americans in the Arts nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also worked with Oscar winners Hilary Swank, Robin Williams, Al Pacino, Susan Sarandon and Gary Sinise to name a few. He has won a Gemini Award for Best Ensemble Performance in a Comedy Program or Series for Corner Gas in 2007.

Cardinal is also a director of stage and television with such credits as Renegadepress.com, Moccasin Flats and Rabbit Fall. Lorne also does hosting duties for award shows as National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards and National Aboriginal Day.

Heralded by TV Guide as "one of Canada's Top Ten Superstars", Tara Spencer-Nairn is currently best-known as the familiar face of deadpan police officer Karen Pelly on the hit Canadian sitcom Corner Gas.

When she's not shooting Corner Gas, Tara is busy acting in a number of movies. The actress was chosen to play Wayne Gretzky's sister Kim in the made for TV movie Waking Up Wally, a drama based on the best-selling biography Walter Gretzky: On Family, Hockey and Healing, which aired on CBC in November 2005.

Born in Montreal, Spencer-Nairn was raised in Vancouver and currently uses Toronto as her home base. The youngest of three siblings the actress spent 12 years as a competitive gymnast. She is a graduate of the prestigious Shawnigan Lake School, on Vancouver Island, which she attended after her rebellious nature resulted in her leaving another private school.

"I was just really angry and had nowhere to focus my angst", she recalls "But as soon as I got into drama, it was somewhere I could let it all out. Oddly enough, I felt safer onstage."

A graduate of the Vancouver Film School, Spencer-Nairn's big breakthrough came in 1999, when she was cast in the highly-acclaimed film New Waterford Girl. The film played at Sundance and the Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for seven Genie awards, including best picture. Tara garnered rave reviews for her portrayal of the disaffected Lou, a Bronx-raised teenager who moves to a small Nova Scotia town and quickly turns it on its ear.

The actress subsequently starred alongside Don McKellar in independent film Rub and Tug. Set in a seedy massage parlour, the 2002 film was Tara's first foray into comedy. The experiment was a success and resulted in a Canadian Comedy Award for 'Pretty Funny Female Performance', for Spencer-Nairn for her portrayal of the street-smart Betty.

In addition to her film work, and her continuing success on Corner Gas, Spencer-Nairn has appeared in numerous television productions including ReGenesis, Puppets Who Kill, Blue Murder, Wes Craven Presents: Don't Look Down, Cold Squad, The Outer Limits, Tom Stone and Relic Hunter.

Nancy Robertson is a talented and versatile award-winning actor with multiple nominations for her work on stage television and film. Some of her credits include playing Harriet, in the feature film The Delicate Art of Parking, Gertrude on Fox TV's Los Louchadres (re-curring) and Deputy Hornbuckle in the film The Christmas Cottage which stars Peter O'toole and Marcia Gay Harden.

She has also been seen in various other episodic series, movies-of-the-week and feature films, but is probably best known for her work as one of the lead characters in Canada's top rated comedy Corner Gas, where she plays the smart but socially stunted Wanda Dollard. Her work as Wanda earned her and her cast mates a Gemini Award for Best Ensemble, and she has also been nominated individually for 3 Canadian Comedy Awards and 4 Leo Awards.

She makes her home in Vancouver, BC, where she was born and raised.

CTV Invited Canada to Say Goodbye to CORNER GAS with a "Pump Out a Poster Contest."

As the series finale of CORNER GAS approached on April 13, CTV gave fans the opportunity to say goodbye to Canada's #1 original comedy series in their own unique way. The "Corner Gas Pump Out a Poster Contest" allowed viewers to express their feelings visually about the end of the Corner Gas era and say goodbye at the same time.

The Grand Prize winner of the "Pump Out a Poster Contest" receives the honor of having their artwork live on forever as the official, limited edition, CORNER GAS commemorative poster, chosen by series creator Brent Butt among others, along with $3,500 worth of prizes. Four secondary prizes were be awarded.

The Official CORNER GAS Poster will be sold at the Corner Gas store at CornerGas.com. All proceeds go to the Canadian charity, Free The Children, an organization dedicated to helping children around the globe through education and development programs

Corner Gas Pump Out a Poster Contest

In anticipation for the final episode ever of "Corner Gas" on Monday, CTV recently held a contest to see which fan could create the best poster representing the show.

Walt Radda from Little Britain, ON is the Grand Prize winner of the "Corner Gas Pump Out a Poster Contest". His submission, "Thunderface," an ink drawing of the entire cast as the infamous Dog River band on their Farewell Tour, was chosen from nearly 300 entries and becomes the official "Corner Gas" commemorative poster.

Recently retired from General Motors, the 49-year-old father of five and self avowed "Corner Gas" fanatic receives $1,000 cash and more than $2,000 in prizes.

After reviewing the other entries online, I can see why the judges picked Walt's drawing as the winner. I particularly like the subtle details he added to each character, such as Emma's spools of thread and Wanda's licorice.

Four other submissions will receive secondary prizes: Holly Carr (Canning, NS) for her submission in silk entitled "Gas Cast"; Murray Crossman (Red Deer, AB) for his digital creation "So Long, Thank You"; Claudia Mannion (Halifax, NS) for her entry created with hundreds of pieces of felt "Heart Felt"; and Jeanette Jeremoe(Winnipeg, MB) for her digital entry "The Corner Gas Crew." I will be posting photos of these soon.

The winning entry was chosen from a smorgasbord of creative and admirable submissions in every conceivable medium, from more traditional mediums like oil, watercolour and charcoal to etched aluminum, clay, pop-up, caricature, balloons, macaroni, anime and comics. The contest launched on March 23, and closed on April 2. With only 10 days to submit their artwork, CORNER GAS fans pumped out nearly 300 submissions, making it one of the most successful user-generated projects in CTV.ca's history.

The poster contest allowed fans the opportunity to express their feelings visually about the end of the CORNER GAS era and say goodbye at the same time in their own unique way.

In addition to the incredible display of creativity,the contest demonstrated the deep connection viewers have to the series via the artists' statements about their inspiration, as well as the many comments posted alongside each submission.

The official CORNER GAS Screen Saver has now been released for downloading. It is really neat, nifty, cool, fab .... what is the word kids use these days? Anyway, I have mine. This offer is now over but maybe next time.

Lacey was the unlikely champion of an eating contest while Emma enjoyed the pleasures of an MP3 player.

Synopsis:

When Brent entered a reluctant Lacey into an eating contest, it tarnished his reputation and resulted in a very offended Davis. At the Leroys', Emma's new MP3 player allowed Oscar to get away with a bit too much. Karen's auctioneering experience pited Hank and Wanda in a battle of vehicles.

This was a hoot! A #1 funny!

Brent and Lacey sponsor Davis's football team while Karen's reckless driving puts Hank in the driver's seat.

Synopsis:

Davis' decision to take on Brent and Lacey as the sponsors for his soccer team lands him in hot water with the players' parents. Meanwhile, Karen is spooked out of the police cruiser driver's seat and enlists Hank's help getting around town. And when an old tape of Wanda doing television projects for a college broadcast course winds up in Oscar and Emma's hands, it's all fun and games until Oscar and Emma find out the last laugh is on them.

This is a VERY funny episode. It has already aired but we have been promised reruns so if you watch the Comedy Channel you may catch it sometime. If you can't wait until then, Season 6 on DVD is now available for purchase.

Brent changes gears at Corner Gas and offers self-serve, while Lacey goes buffet style at the Ruby.

Synopsis:

Brent thinks the self-serve option at Corner Gas will make his life easier, until he discovers his customers are enjoying it a little too much. On the other hand, Lacey's Ruby buffet has her customers working overtime. Wanda's quest to reclaim her title as Rumor Queen proves disastrous for Karen and Emma, while Hank's old laptop becomes a hot potato when he tries to sell it to either Oscar or Davis.

If you missed this one watch for the rerun or buy the DVD when it comes out. It is Corner Gas funny!

The air conditioner breaks in Corner Gas on the hottest day of the year. Karen and Davis win the meat lottery.

Synopsis:

Hank's mockery of Brent's air conditioner temperature lands him in hot water at Corner Gas. Karen and Davis win a meat draw but trouble starts when they have nowhere to store it and trust Oscar and Emma with their stash. Lacey and Wanda unleash their maternal instincts on an unwanted pet left at the Ruby.

Karen's reputation as a woman of the law is marred over an accidental muffin incident.

Synopsis:

In spite of Lacey and Davis' best efforts, Karen is labeled a thief when she forgets to pay for a muffin. Wanda tries to get inside Hank's head and figure out his new email password, while Brent must put his culinary skills to good use to prove to Oscar and Emma that he is not a freeloading son.

Oscar and Emma enjoy Lacey's company in their new hot tub a lot more than Lacey enjoys theirs. The police department introduces Safety Pete.

Synopsis:

Lacey is excited about Oscar and Emma's hot tub party until she discovers she is the only guest in attendance. Davis charms Dog River as their new safety mascot, until Karen dons the suit. Brent tries to crack the mystery of where Hank is staying after damage to Hank's house leaves him homeless.

Hank helps Brent's dad stay one step ahead of a tax auditor and everyone gets a lesson in proper article use.

Synopsis:

When a tax man comes to audit the Corner Gas business records, Brent's dad Oscar and friend Hank immediately plot revenge by devising a fool-proof plan to humiliate the auditor. Unfortunately for Hank and Oscar, Emma's excellent record-keeping throws the whole clock-work operation into chaos and Hank learns you shouldn't carry out a humiliation plan after you've been drinking. Meanwhile, Lacey's big city approach to selling coffee doesn't fly with the locals.

Lacey is stuck in the middle as Brent and Oscar form competing rinks in a cross-generational curling grudge match.

Synopsis:

The Leroy family has long been a proud and ineffective curling dynasty but this year a schism in the ranks has Brent and Oscar skipping different rinks. Then when a local senior's hip replacement creates a shortage of female curlers, Lacey finds herself the hottest rookie prospect in the league. Meanwhile Karen is put in charge of safeguarding the famed curling trophy - the Clavet Cup - which turns out to be harder than she thought.

Synopsis:

When Brent decides to learn the guitar, his instructor makes him realize just how uncool he is, and leads Oscar into the path of his childhood nemesis. Wanda takes on a secret identity in a new Howler column much to the suspicion of Lacey and inconvenience of Davis. Hank tries to prove he's stronger than Emma after taking Karen's workout advice.

Oscar and Emma's new home alarm system causes more emergencies than Davis bargained for.

Lacey attempts to save Dog River Days while Karen tries to convince the town that she is not a crazy cat lady.

Synopsis:

When it is announced that Dog River Days has been cancelled, Lacey enlists the help of Davis and Hank to save them. Emma asks Oscar to get rid of the stray cats in her garden, but the task proves more difficult than Oscar thought, and gives Karen a new reputation. Brent fakes an injury in Corner Gas to teach Wanda a lesson.

Davis gets a lesson in sensitivity after Karen is offended by his blonde jokes. Brent and Lacey try to convince Hank that superstitions are fake and Wanda takes on Emma's identity at the Rec Plex realizing that becoming Emma Leroy isn't as easy as she thought.

Canada's #1 original comedy series CORNER GAS commemorated its 100th milestone episode in "TV Free Dog River", premiering Monday, March 2, once again rounding off CTV's two-hour Monday night comedy block.

This history making episode kicks off the series' final victory lap, with seven episodes left until Dog River says good-bye forever.

As of March 2, CORNER GAS stands proud amongst a short list of Canadian scripted series to have reached 100 episodes. This notable list includes: THE KING OF KENSINGTON, Degrassi: The Next Generation, Kids in the Hall, and THE Beachcombers, to name few.

~ Comedian Brent Butt has created in ingenious, quirky, and most of all hilarious show about life in a small town.

~ "Corner Gas" can best be described as the "Seinfeld" of the Canadian prairies. It's a show about, well, nothing. In the little town of Dog River nothing much happens and the people like it that way, however when something out of the ordinary does happen, all hell breaks loose.

~ Brent Butt plays Corner Gas station owner Brent LeRoy, and he's joined by Gabrielle Miller who plays Lacey Burrows, the new girl in town who hails from Toronto and discovers that life in Ontario and life in Saskatchewan are both vastly different things. Eric Peterson plays Brent's crotchety father Oscar, who cannot even be asked simple question without losing his temper, ("Lemme answer your question with a question; shut up!"). Janet Wright plays Oscar's patient and sensible wife Emma, who as far as it seems is the only sane person in Dog River. Lorne Cardinal portrays Dog River's senior officer of the town's two-person police force Davis Quinton, who's biggest thrill on the job is stopping and holding up traffic (what little there is in Dog River). Tara Spencer-Nairn plays Karen Pelly, the rookie police officer of Dog River, but it often seems that she has just a little more sense than her superior officer. Fred Ewaniuk plays Hank Yarbo, Brent's best friend and basically the village idiot of Dog River, he has one dream left to fulfill in his life, to be zapped by a stun-gun (don't ask). Rounding out the cast is Nancy Robertson as Wanda Dollard, the sarcastic employee of Corner Gas who is pretty much the smartest person in town, she has studied things in college such as quantum physics and biochemistry, and yet works at the gas station simply because the last girl quit.

~ I liked it so much I got the first four seasons on DVD from the Corner Gas website. I've had to stop myself from watching all of them non-stop, to try to stretch the fun out a little longer--and I still tune into the episodes shown on Chicago's WGN network. It's just excellent fun, all the way around.

~ It's a show that asks the questions; what's life in a small town like? Could you stand it if you moved there from the big city? Are all of these small blink or you'll miss 'em towns really all that quaint? And most importantly, is Saskatchewan really all that boring? Brent Butt and company manage to answer these and other questions, with hilarious results each and every week.

~ The cast is likeable, and they all interact so very well with each other. The writing and the plot situations are just wonderful fun, along with the quick retorts and the fast SWISH to and then SWISH back from flashback scenes. (I loved it when Brent and Hank were walking along and mentioned something about back when they were kids, SWISH to two kids...and then Brent and Hank walked right by them wondering who the two kids were. Fade-out flashback; I laughed out loud!)

~ It's complete silly fun entertainment. I've enjoyed every single episode.

~ The locations from the main Corner Gas gas station and The Ruby to Emma & Oscar's house, to the bar and downtown area, etc., are all very pleasant, very comfortable. The guest stars are great.

~ "Corner Gas" is the best Canadian show out there, it's funny, smart, and in it's own unusual way heartfelt. Do yourself a favor and tune in you'll be glad you did.

~ This Canadian comedy is a cross between "Seinfeld" and "Green Acres" if you can imagine that. I have seen every episode WGN shows thanks to the miracle of DVR.

A. You are far from alone...I liked this show immediately, right from the very first "How do you mean? Topographically I guess." I wouldn't put your IQ on trial here. I remember an original Star Trek episode where the aliens had an entire planet set up *just* for amusement. When questioned about it, they said their civilization came to find that the more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play. Fans of Corner Gas hoping for a movie need not hold their breath - Butt said it's something that he would like to see happen. "The notion of doing a movie is something that's been kicked around and talked about. All the people who need to say, 'Yes,' to make it happen seem to like the idea of it happening," he said. "While there isn't any schedule or any sort of effort at the moment to put a movie together, I would be surprised if at some point there wasn't a Corner Gas movie. I certainly would like to see it."

Canadian Films whiff of fromage

I was in Thailand and a movie came on. It had a certain element of cheese to it. Not a a terrible movie, just cheesy. So much that my boyfriend at the time and I remarked to each other that it seemed like a canadian film. Sure enough when the credits rolled by it was made in part by the national film board of canada. Maybe it's not all canadian films just those sponsered by the NFB that have that whiff of fromage.

SIDE NOTE: I also caught corner gas in Egypt. Which blew me away. Of all the shows to get picked up in Egypt it was corner gas. Too funny.

CTV stars helped mark World AIDS Day

TORONTO - CTV stars including "Corner Gas" actress Tara Spencer-Nairn and members of the "Degrassi" cast got their hands dirty in an effort to help raise awareness and funds for AIDS research and services.

Kiehl's invited the Canadian celebs to its Queen Street West store in downtown Toronto for World AIDS Day to dip their hands into red ink and place their prints on a Kiehl's Commitment to Community quilt, which is on display at all of the company's stores.

The quilt will be collected and sewn together by noted New York fashion designer Derek Lam and auctioned off for YouthAIDS, Population Services International's HIV-AIDS prevention initiative which reaches more than 600 million young people in 60 countries.

The final episode of CTV's hit comedy series Corner Gas aired this past Monday and, like many people, I'm really going to miss it.

Corner Gas was such a goofy little show that it never seemed to attract the critical laurels of, for example, the dark and brooding DaVinci's Inquest.

I once saw it described as, "Seinfeld of the Wheat Fields" and like that iconic show, it wasn't really about anything.

But Corner Gas was something that very few shows are these days: consistently funny.

The other day I was trying to think of other comedies -- whether Canadian, British or American -- that were as reliably funny as Corner Gas. I could only think of three: The Office, 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm. And Curb is definitely an acquired taste.

Don't get me wrong. I like serious TV, too. But there's something to be said about a show you can count on to make you laugh week in and week out.

One of the other interesting things about Corner Gas, I think, is that it generated those laughs without one of the plot devices most often relied on in sitcoms: relationships.

Aside from some awkward flirting between Lacey and Brent in Season 1, the personal lives of the characters was virtually never explored. In fact, aside from Oscar and Emma, none of the characters seemed to even have personal lives. Did we ever see Brent, Lacey, Wanda, Hank, Karen or Davis with a significant other -- or even out on a date?

Instead, the show mined its humor from the daily banalities of life, from tiny cellphones to charades, from barns and cows to rock stars.

I think my favorite character of all was Hank, with Lacey coming in a close second.

As the final season of CORNER GAS has now aired, the web site has been scaled back and a simpler version of cornergas.com has been put up.. Unfortunately the RUBY will be permanently closed, along with Prairie Scramble and Combine Racing. The bloopers and program information will remain available.

Farewell and Keep in Touch from Brent Butt

Hi Everybody,

This is just a quick note to say a HUGE thank you to all of you for watching Corner Gas over the years. It was a fantastic run, and a truly wonderful experience, and knowing that there were over a million of you tuning in each week never failed to blow my mind. A million people is a lot of people. A million and a half is .. you know .. even more!!! (I took some kind of math class once, back in high school, so I feel confident saying that.)

Over the next while I'm going to be trying my hand at a few other projects. I'm putting together another TV series, called HICCUPS, and I'll be shooting a comedy/variety special for CTV this summer. I also signed a deal to star in a feature film I wrote, which we'll probably be shooting next spring. Of course, I'm going to try to stay busy doing stand-up as well. (Ahhhh stand-up. It's the only hour of the day that makes sense to me.) And I have some cool internet ventures in the works too. Basically, I'm doing my level best to remain in show business somehow.

Otherwise I have to go back to drywalling.

In the next little while I'm having my personal website - BrentButt.com - completely redesigned and rebuilt. So please check in soon. CTV confirmed that the first projects on its production slate for the 2010/11 season, including two, new, 13-part comedy series. Created, executive produced and written by the incomparable CORNER GAS creator and star Brent Butt, HICCUPS stars CORNER GAS' Nancy Robertson as a children's author with anger issues and Butt as her hapless "life coach". DAN FOR MAYOR, from three of Canada's most respected comedy writers and producers, Mark Farrell, Paul Mather and Kevin White, stars CORNER GAS alumnus Fred Ewanuick as a 30-something bartender who runs for mayor of his hometown.

Back Where He Began .. On Stage

Playing hung-over, cussin' low-life in Thunderstruck, Cardinal and his cousin (Craig Lauzon best known in Air Farce) are two journalist covering Parliament Hill who attract trouble like 2 stray cats.

Thunderstruck, a co-production with Edmonton's Theatre Network, runs until Nov 15th at the Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon and moves to Edmonton's Roxy Theatre from Jan. 14th to 31st.

~ Involved in Wolf Canyon a pilot comedy for APTN. He plays Hoyt Talbot Jr., a drunk stuntman who gets all his lines mixed up, blurting out inappropriate lines from past films. Pilot to air Dec. 26 on APTN.

~ Continues to be be the voice-star in the Gemini winning animation series Wapos Bay.

~ Involved in Man to Man, a new campaign to fight child sexual abuse.

~ Wants to play Shakespeare.

~ Wants to play Irish characters.

~ Wants to play Swedish characters.

Having watched Lorne in the many skits he played in Corner Gas, I have no doubt that he can, indeed, master any role he endeavors to play.

DAN FOR MAYOR charts Dan's voyage of self-discovery as he, along with ex-girlfriend, Claire, and best friend, Jeff, stumble their way towards election night and beyond.

Fred Ewanuick, of "Corner Gas," has his own show "Dan For Mayor" scheduled to air in the fall of 2010.

Currently shooting in Toronto, Kitchener and Waterloo, Ontario, Dan For Mayor is being written by three of Canada's most respected writers and producers. Executive Producers Mark Farrell (CORNER GAS; THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES), Paul Mather (CORNER GAS; THE RICK MERCER REPORT) and Kevin White (CORNER GAS; THIS HOUR HAS 22 MINUTES). Susan Murdoch (Doomstown) is Producer. Ron Murphy (BEING ERICA; REGENESIS) and Brian Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond; the Drew Carey Show) are the Directors. Michelle Daly is the Director of Content, The Comedy Network and Susanne Boyce is President, Creative, Content and Channels, CTV Inc.

Starring CORNER GAS and ROBSON ARMS alumnus Fred Ewanuick as the lead character Dan, the thirteen, 30-minute episodes will continue principal photography through November.

Dan (Ewanuick) is a 30-something bartender who lives and works and wants to become the mayor in the fictional city of Wessex, Ontario.

Dan has had the same friends since grade school, his most prized possession is a vintage Ms. Pac-Man game and his last serious relationship was with a girl who is now engaged to someone else. His life seems to be firmly on the path to more of the same ... until a chance comment suddenly puts him in the running for mayor of Wessex.

DAN FOR MAYOR, is produced by Sad Glasses and QVF Inc. in association with CTV and The Comedy Network.

Paul Bates (Welcome to Mooseport; The Tuxedo) as Jeff, Dan's best friend who Dan ropes into being his campaign manager.

Starring alongside Fred Ewanuick is Mary Ashton (JEFF LTD; Degrassi Goes Hollywood) as Dan's newly engaged ex-girlfriend Claire who has moved on to a more sensible, grown up relationship.

another "CORNER GAS?"

There are noises being made that a pilot for a projected half-hour TV series based on "Men With Brooms," the popular 2002 movie starring Paul Gross (who also directed), produced by the elder Lantos, Robert, is being organized.

CBC Television has just made a deal for the pilot with Serendipity Point Films (the company Lantos founded) and E1 Television.

Paul Mather, one of the creative forces behind Corner Gas and Little Mosque on the Prairie, has been recruited as head writer, a clear sign the CBC hopes this will become another hit sitcom about a Canadian small town for its early-evening audience.

Paul Gross will be an executive producer of the TV show and make occasional appearances if it turns into a series.

Some of you might not even know what curling is, but it is big in Canada and some northern European countries. The object is to slide big stones over ice to some kind of bulls eye... Just wait for the next winter Olympics!

This story is about a great team that had to split up after the captain cheated. Ten years later their coach has died and in his will asks them to once more try to win the title.
